Answer style

"Type" applies to partner and reading questions. You can type hiragana or rōmaji (for example agaru).

Speaker buttons read the word in Japanese. Kanji and reading questions have no speaker buttons, because the sound gives the answer. The buttons show again after you answer.

How this drill helps you remember
  • Retrieval, not rereading. Every item makes you recall an answer. Testing gives better long-term memory than study alone.
  • Spaced review. Each pair has a separate review schedule for each skill (1, 3, 7, 14, 30, 60, 120 days). A wrong answer resets that skill and the item comes back later in the same session.
  • Mixed practice. Groups and skills are mixed in each session. Mixing similar items makes you notice the differences between them.
  • Contrast. After each answer you see the two verbs side by side (〜が 自動詞 and 〜を 他動詞). Homophones, for example 暖まる and 温まる, are distractors for each other.
  • Patterns. The groups follow the sound patterns of the book (①–⑩). In this list, every verb that ends in -su is 他動詞. Every -aru verb is 自動詞, except 割る. An -eru verb can be either, so learn the partner.
  • Production. "Type" mode makes you produce the form. This is harder than selecting it, but it is better for learning the spelling.
